Obverse description The central field displays the state emblem of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, depicting a hydroelectric power station beneath a radiant star, framed by sheaves of rice tied with a ribbon bearing an inscription in Korean script. Flanking the emblem in the lower field are two decorative olive branches. The circular legend in Korean characters reads 조선민주주의인민공화국중앙은행 (Central Bank of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea), arcing along the upper periphery. The purity designation '999' and weight indicator '1 OZ' appear in the lower field to either side of the emblem, with the date '1996' inscribed below the olive branches.
