Additional information

The Academia Operosorum Labacensium was founded in Ljubljana in 1693, making it one of the oldest learned societies in Central Europe — predating many of the better-known Enlightenment academies by decades. This 1993 coin marks the tercentenary. Slovenia had declared independence just two years earlier, and the young republic was actively mining its pre-Habsburg intellectual history for symbols of cultural legitimacy distinct from Yugoslav identity.

The academy itself dissolved in 1725, leaving behind a relatively thin documentary record, which partly explains why it remained obscure outside Slovenian historiography until anniversary commemorations like this one revived broader interest.
