The Mongolian lunar series of this period was produced under contract by foreign mints — the Bank of Mongolia had no domestic striking facility capable of proof-quality work — and the gilt variants were issued in strictly limited numbers alongside their non-gilt counterparts. The Rat opens the twelve-year lunar cycle, making 2008 the first release if Mongolia began its series that year, though several national mints launched competing lunar programs simultaneously as the Beijing Olympics drove collector interest in East Asian themes to a peak.
