Mongolia's lunar series coins of this period were produced under contract by foreign mints — almost certainly a European facility — since the Mongolian state mint lacked the capacity for proof-quality numismatic issues. The "Year of the Rat" designation follows the traditional 60-year sexagenary cycle of the Mongolian calendar, which runs parallel to but is not identical in naming conventions to the Chinese zodiac system, though both share the same 12-animal sequence.
