| 正面铭文 | МОНГОЛ БАНК 500 ТӨГРӨГ MONGOLIA 1oz .999 SILVER |
| 背面描述 | The reverse features a highly detailed, full-color depiction of a rat rendered naturalistically in warm golden-brown tones, seated and facing right against a circular blue background. The arc legend 'YEAR OF THE RAT' appears at the top of the field in Latin script. To the lower left, the fineness inscription '.999 SILVER 1 OZ' is inscribed in the field. A Chinese character for rat (鼠) is positioned to the lower right of the central motif. The date '2008' is inscribed at the bottom of the field, with a beaded inner border encircling the design. |

Mongolia's lunar series coins were produced under contract by foreign mints — this piece almost certainly struck by the Bald Eagle Mint or a comparable European facility, as the Bank of Mongolia has never operated production infrastructure capable of colorized silver issues. The Year of the Rat opens the twelve-year lunar cycle, making 2008 issues the anchor of any complete set.
The rat holds an ambivalent place in Mongolian folk tradition compared to its more celebrated status in Chinese astrology, yet demand from the broader East Asian collector market drove most of these issues out of Mongolia almost immediately upon release.
