Mongolia's lunar series of the late 1990s was produced for the international collector market during a period when the country was still navigating the economic collapse that followed the end of Soviet subsidy in 1991. The Tögrög had lost catastrophic value through the early part of the decade, and hard-currency coin programs like this one were effectively a foreign exchange tool as much as anything else.
The gilt variant, catalogued separately from the standard KM#160, was applied post-strike and issued in smaller quantities alongside the plain silver edition.
