Mongolia had no footballing connection to the 2002 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by South Korea and Japan, but the tournament's commercial licensing program allowed any participating national bank to issue commemorative silver. The Bank of Mongolia took full advantage, producing a series aimed squarely at the international collector market rather than domestic circulation — the face value of 500 Tögrög was nominal against the silver content alone.
