Mongolia joined UNICEF as a member state in 1962, and by the 1990s the organization was deeply involved in the country following the collapse of the Soviet-backed People's Republic in 1990 — a transition that produced serious economic contraction and strain on public health infrastructure. This coin was part of a broader wave of Mongolian commemorative silver issues from the mid-1990s aimed squarely at the collector market, a revenue strategy the Bank of Mongolia pursued aggressively as hard currency reserves remained thin.
