Mongolia's connection to the Sputnik anniversary is purely commemorative — the country had no role in the Soviet space program — but the Bank of Mongolia was among the most aggressive issuers of novelty bullion in the 2000s, producing dozens of small-format gold pieces for the collector market rather than circulation. The 50th anniversary of Sputnik's October 1957 launch drew commemorative issues from mints worldwide that year.
At 0.5 grams, the gold content is negligible as bullion. These were sold at substantial premiums to melt value from the date of issue.
