| Beschrijving voorzijde | Central field features the emblem of the Bank of Mongolia — a soyombo-topped cartouche enclosing the Mongolian script inscription 'Монгол Банк' on a decorative oval panel, flanked by traditional Mongolian script characters at left and right. Below the emblem, the face value '500 ТӨГРӨГ' is boldly rendered in large numerals, with the date '2003' beneath. Along the lower rim, the legend reads 'MONGOLIA 1/25 OZ 999,9 GOLD' in Latin characters, denoting the metallic composition and weight specification. |

Part of a multi-piece series issued by the Bank of Mongolia commemorating Marco Polo's 13th-century travels through Central Asia, this piece addresses the return leg of a journey that lasted roughly 24 years in total. Polo departed Venice around 1271 and did not return until 1295, arriving — according to later accounts — barely recognized by his own family.
The .9999 fineness and fractional weight place this squarely in the small-format bullion-collector market that Mongolian state mints leaned into heavily during the early 2000s.
