Mongolia made its Winter Olympics debut at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games, sending a small delegation that included cross-country skiers — the first time the country had competed in a winter edition after decades of Summer Games participation. This coin commemorates that debut year, issued the following year while the achievement was still fresh in public memory.
The .925 silver standard here matches the fineness Mongolia used across most of its commemorative program in this period, when the Bank of Mongolia was aggressively expanding its themed collector series to generate hard currency revenue through overseas sales.
