The Eurasian Economic Union formally came into force on January 1, 2015, uniting Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Armenia, and Kyrgyzstan under a single economic framework — the most ambitious post-Soviet integration project attempted since the USSR's collapse. Kazakhstan's issuance of this commemorative within months of the treaty's activation reflects the Nazarbayev government's particular investment in the project; Nursultan Nazarbayev had been publicly advocating for a Eurasian union since a 1994 speech at Moscow State University, over two decades before it materialized.
