Sirko was a legendary Zaporozhian Cossack hetman of the 17th century, celebrated in Ukrainian and Kazakh steppe tradition as a near-mythical military commander. His name is inseparable from the famous 1676 letter the Zaporozhian Cossacks allegedly sent to the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed IV — a document so steeped in colorful obscenity that Repin painted it in 1891. Kazakhstan's commemorative program has periodically honored figures from the broader nomadic and steppe warrior heritage, and Sirko's inclusion reflects that cross-cultural reach.
