Kazakhstan's wildlife conservation coin program, launched in the early 2000s, drew on the country's position as a Central Asian flyway for migratory birds — the Dalmatian pelican breeds in the wetlands of the Ili River delta and around the Aral Sea basin, populations that had come under severe pressure as the Aral Sea contracted through Soviet-era irrigation diversion. By 2010, the species remained on Kazakhstan's Red List.
