Otau Koteru — literally "to set up a yurt" — is one of several Kazakh wedding customs commemorated in the National Bank's ongoing ethnographic silver series, which began in the early 2000s as a deliberate effort to document disappearing nomadic traditions in collectible form. The practice involves the bride's family erecting a new yurt for the couple, a ritual with deep roots in steppe pastoral life that was systematically suppressed during Soviet collectivization.
