The Siberian (or Altai) maral — the red deer subspecies native to Kazakhstan's mountain ranges — was already under significant hunting pressure by the mid-2000s, prompting domestic conservation legislation around the same time this coin was issued. Kazakhstan's commemorative program during this period leaned heavily on endangered fauna, partly as a soft-diplomacy signal to international conservation bodies the government was courting for joint reserve agreements in the Altai-Sayan region.
