Otrar — known in medieval sources as Utrar or Farab — was one of the great cities of the Silk Road before the Mongol invasion of 1219, when Genghis Khan's forces razed it in retaliation for the execution of his trade envoy by the city's governor, Qadir Khan. The destruction was so complete that Otrar never fully recovered, diminishing over subsequent centuries into the archaeological site excavated by Soviet and later Kazakhstani teams near the Syr Darya river.
The blackened silver center is a production technique Kazakhstan's mint used selectively on commemorative issues of this period to distinguish inlaid or contrasting elements within bimetallic-style compositions.
