Beket-Ata was an 18th-century Sufi mystic and healer whose underground mosque at Oglandy, carved into chalk cliffs in the Mangystau region, remains an active pilgrimage site. Kazakhstan issued a series of silver coins commemorating sacred sites of the region beginning in the late 2000s, with this piece honoring one of the most visited destinations in the country's west — a place that drew pilgrims even during the Soviet period, when religious observance was officially suppressed.
