Abai Qunanbaiuly, the 19th-century Kazakh poet and philosopher whose Russified name "Abai" appears on this coin, is the foundational figure of written Kazakh literature — his Book of Words, a collection of philosophical prose poems, remains required reading in Kazakhstan's schools.
