The P#119 series spans an unusually long window — over a decade — during which Ecuador weathered a sharp oil boom and subsequent fiscal deterioration. The 500 Sucre denomination carried real purchasing weight when the series opened in 1976; by the late 1980s, chronic inflation had eroded that to near nothing, and larger denominations were already crowding it out.
Thomas De La Rue held the Banco Central contract through multiple political administrations without interruption, which accounts for the design consistency across the date range despite the turbulent monetary backdrop. Later-dated specimens are more commonly encountered than early ones.
