Obverse description The colorized coat of arms of Tajikistan occupies the central field, depicting a rising sun behind a mountain range above an open book, flanked by sheaves of wheat on the right and cotton bolls on the left, bound by the national tricolor ribbon and surmounted by a crown and a semicircle of seven stars. The Cyrillic legend ҶУМҲУРИИ ТОҶИКИСТОН arcs along the upper periphery, while REPUBLIC OF TAJIKISTAN runs along the lower periphery in Latin script. The denomination 500 СОМОНӢ and the date 2014 appear in the lower field in gilded numerals, with the fineness mark Ag 925 and the weight 31,1 inscribed vertically on either side of the arms. A beaded inner border frames the design.

Additional information

Tajikistan's National Library in Dushanbe was constructed largely with Chinese financing and opened in 2012, part of a broader infrastructure push that also included the country's tallest flagpole — at the time of its completion, the tallest in the world. The commemorative program surrounding national institutions accelerated sharply after 2010 as the government of Emomali Rahmon used coinage and architectural monuments to consolidate a national identity in a country barely two decades removed from a devastating civil war that killed an estimated 50,000 people.

KM#42 is one of several silver issues from this period struck to proof standard at foreign mints under contract.
