Somalia's independence commemoratives of 1965–66 were issued under the civilian government of Prime Minister Abdi Rashid Ali Shermarke, just years before the 1969 coup that brought Siad Barre to power and effectively ended the democratic republic these coins were struck to celebrate. The series was produced in extremely limited quantities for a nascent state with no established minting infrastructure of its own — production was contracted to foreign facilities.
At 70 grams of .900 gold, this is one of the heaviest commemorative issues from any African nation in the 1960s, placing it firmly in the category of presentation pieces rather than anything approaching circulation.
