Uganda's wildlife commemorative program of the late 1990s was aimed squarely at the collector export market, with the Bank of Uganda licensing designs through intermediary minting agencies — a common arrangement that kept production costs off domestic budgets while generating foreign currency. The dusky bushbaby (Galago matschiei), native to Uganda's montane forests, was already under pressure from habitat loss by the time this coin was issued.
