This coin was issued the year Obote returned to power following the overthrow of Idi Amin's regime, a period of violent political instability during which Uganda's economy was in ruins and its currency effectively worthless in practical terms. That a large silver commemorative was produced at all speaks more to the international collector market than to domestic monetary conditions.
