Somaliland's unilateral declaration of independence in 1991 was recognized by no sovereign state, yet the administration in Hargeisa pressed ahead with full monetary infrastructure — issuing its own currency as a practical assertion of functional governance rather than diplomatic status. The 500 Shillings P#13 was part of that project, carrying the "commemorative" designation in connection with the fifth anniversary of the republic's self-declared independence.
The "Bronze" in the series title refers to a tiered commemorative classification, not the substrate — the note is paper, like the rest of the Somaliland shilling issues of the period.
