500 Shillings

Uganda's 500 Shilling note was introduced as the country was consolidating its monetary framework after the catastrophic currency destruction of the Amin and Obote II years, during which inflation had rendered earlier denominations nearly worthless. By 1991, the shilling had been redenominated and the Bank of Uganda was rebuilding public confidence in paper currency from near zero.

Thomas De La Rue's involvement guaranteed a level of security production unavailable domestically, though the watermark remains the sole listed security feature — modest by the standards of the period.
