Victor Adler founded the Social Democratic Party of Austria in 1889 at the Hainfeld Congress, unifying a fractured workers' movement into a single political force. He died on November 11, 1918 — the day the Austrian Republic was proclaimed, a coincidence so striking that contemporaries treated it as almost symbolic. The 1988 issue marks the centenary of that Hainfeld unification.
