To the right of the artisan, partially finished Gothic or Baroque architectural stone carvings are displayed upright, illustrating the craft traditions of Austrian masonry. The composition fills the entire field without a border legend, rendered in high relief with strong modelling that emphasises the texture of the craftsman's garments and tools. The engraver's initials appear discretely in the lower right field. |

Part of Austria's long-running "People and Work" silver series, which documented traditional trades and crafts through the 1990s. The stonemason issue appeared at a moment when Austrian stonemasonry was undergoing a quiet institutional revival — several historic restoration projects on Vienna's Gothic and Baroque civic buildings had created renewed demand for practitioners of a trade that had nearly vanished as a formal apprenticeship track after World War II.
Mintage for the series was capped to maintain collector premiums, and most examples went directly into sets rather than circulation — the 500 Schilling face value placed them well above purchasing utility.
