| 正面描述 | A detailed aerial perspective view of Schattenburg Castle dominates the field, depicting the medieval fortress with its characteristic square tower, steeply pitched roofs, and surrounding outbuildings set among stylized trees. In the lower portion of the design, the rooftops of the town of Feldkirch spread across the foreground in a sweeping panoramic composition. The inscription 'SCHATTENBURG' and date '2001' appear in the upper right field in a distinctive calligraphic script, while the legend 'REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH' and denomination '500 SCHILLING' are rendered in bold relief in the lower right field. |

Austria's 500 Schilling denomination had just months left as legal tender when this piece was struck — the schilling was demonetized on January 1, 2002, replaced by the euro. Coins issued in 2001 were effectively collector pieces from the outset, with circulation an afterthought.
Schattenburg castle in Feldkirch, Vorarlberg dates to the early 12th century and served as the seat of the Counts of Montfort. The choice to commemorate it in the final year of schilling coinage reflects the mint's long practice of closing out the series with regional architectural subjects.
