Obverse description A detailed architectural view of Rosenburg Castle occupies the upper portion of the field, rendered with fine engraving depicting its characteristic towers, rooflines, and courtyard gate. In the lower left foreground, a perched falcon — the emblem associated with the falconry traditions of Rosenburg — stands atop a heraldic shield, its plumage rendered in intricate relief. The legend ROSENBURG appears at the top of the field in a decorative medieval-style typeface, while the inscriptions REPUBLIK OSTERREICH, 500 SCHILLING, and the date 1999 are arranged in the lower field.

Additional information

The Rosenburg, a Renaissance castle in Lower Austria's Kamptal valley, had fallen into severe disrepair by the mid-twentieth century before being restored by the Hoyos family across several decades. Austria's late-1990s silver commemorative program frequently drew on architectural subjects that had benefited from private restoration efforts, giving institutional weight to what were otherwise personal preservation projects.

The .925 standard used here was Austria's established fineness for commemorative issues of this period, consistent across the series rather than chosen for this coin specifically.
