Obverse description A panoramic view of Hochosterwitz Castle dominates the upper portion of the field, depicted atop its characteristic rocky outcrop with towers, fortified walls, and a flag flying above the main keep, rendered in a detailed illustrative style. To the lower right, the walled outer precincts of the castle complex and a church steeple extend across the middle ground, while a cluster of village buildings occupies the lower right field. The legend HOCH- / OSTER- / WITZ appears in stylized Gothic-influenced lettering at the upper right. In the lower left field, the inscriptions REPUBLIK / ÖSTERREICH and the denomination 500 / Schilling are rendered in large display lettering, with the date 2000 incuse along the lower right rim.

Reverse description A medieval-style scene rendered in low relief after a historical manuscript illumination depicts three seated figures beneath a Gothic arcade with pointed arches and a rosette oculus above. At left, a robed ecclesiastical or courtly scribe holds an unfurled scroll or document; at centre, a woman with a long braided plait gestures in conversation; at right, a crowned male figure in draped robes is seated in a throne-like chair. The composition evokes the formal granting or reading of a charter, referencing the historical privileges associated with Hochosterwitz Castle. The engraver's monogram TP (Thomas Pesendorfer) is visible in the lower left field.
