Indonesia's long-running fauna series has used coinage as a vehicle for biodiversity documentation since the 1990s, but the 2016–2017 issues represent a deliberate government push to redesign the entire circulating rupiah series for the first time in decades — the result of a 2016 Bank Indonesia regulation requiring all new-format coins to enter circulation by mid-2017. The Calosoma inquisitor, a ground beetle known for preying on forest caterpillars, is an ecologically specific choice rather than a charismatic flagship species.
Brass was selected across the new 2017 denominations partly in response to longstanding counterfeiting concerns with the older bimetallic issues.
