Nepal was admitted to the United Nations in 1955, one of the earliest Himalayan states to gain full membership during the post-war wave of decolonization. The 2005 issue marks the exact half-century. What makes the timing awkward is the issuer's authority: Gyanendra had dissolved parliament in February 2005, assumed direct rule, and was governing under a state of emergency — making this a coin celebrating international cooperation struck under a monarch whose domestic legitimacy was actively contested.
He was deposed three years later.
