The ₹ symbol first appeared on Indian banknotes in 2011, following its official adoption by the Government of India in 2010 — the product of a national design competition won by D. Udaya Kumar, whose symbol blends the Devanagari "Ra" with a double horizontal bar reminiscent of European currency signs. This series was the first to carry it on the 500-rupee denomination, which made the notes immediately distinguishable from the otherwise nearly identical pre-symbol issues still in simultaneous circulation.

The overlapping signatures across 2013–2014 reflect the governorship transition from Duvvuri Subbarao to Raghuram Rajan in September 2013. Printing schedules mean dated and signed combinations don't always align chronologically — the 2014-dated Subbarao plate letter E variant is a known anomaly from pre-signed stocks cleared after his term ended.
