Nepal's wildlife conservation coinage of the early 1990s was issued partly in response to international pressure following the country's accession to CITES, with the Himalayan black bear among several species highlighted as facing serious habitat loss due to deforestation in the middle hill zones. The series was struck for the collector export market rather than domestic circulation — rupee-denominated silver coins of this value never meaningfully entered Nepali commerce.
Produced at a foreign mint on contract, likely the British Royal Mint or a European facility, under license from Nepal Rastra Bank during Birendra's reign.
