Armenia's first sovereign banknote series, issued after independence from the Soviet Union, was printed under considerable logistical pressure — the country had no established printing infrastructure and relied on foreign contractors. The 500 Roubli sits in an transitional moment when Armenia was simultaneously running Soviet-era roubles and its own parallel issues before the dram replaced the rouble entirely in November 1993.

The "A" suffix on the Pick number denotes a signature variety, not a distinct emission — a distinction that trips up collectors working from incomplete checklists.
