At lower left, Napoleonic troops advance in formation, rendered in a combination of relief and engraved contour work; at centre, a trench shelters defending Russian soldiers; to the upper right, the forces of the Russian Imperial Army are arrayed in relief and contour. In the background, a church appears to the left and a redoubt to the right, conveying the breadth of the battlefield. At the upper rim, the icon of the Mother of God of Smolensk is depicted, while at the lower rim a shako surmounting crossed weapons, standards, and military accoutrements frames the curved inscription ОТЕЧЕСТВЕННАЯ ВОЙНА 1812 ГОДА (THE PATRIOTIC WAR OF 1812). |
