The Armed Forces of South Russia — Denikin's White Army administration — issued this note as part of a parallel currency system operating across territory that changed hands repeatedly throughout 1919. The South Russian emission was not backed by any functioning central bank; it was essentially printed to pay troops and requisition supplies, which meant inflationary pressure was baked in from the start. As Bolshevik forces pushed south, confidence in these notes collapsed faster than the military situation itself.
Pick S440 is part of a large family of South Russian issues, many of which were printed under difficult logistical conditions. Counterfeits appeared early — both Bolshevik-produced forgeries intended to destabilize the White economy and opportunistic local fakes.
