The Zhyrovitsky Monastery, located in what is now Grodno Oblast, has been a functioning Orthodox Christian site since the late 15th century, when a miraculous icon of the Virgin was reportedly discovered on the estate of a Lithuanian nobleman. The monastery survived the Uniate period under Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth rule, Russian imperial absorption, and Soviet anti-religious campaigns — a run of institutional durability that explains its continued veneration in modern Belarusian religious culture.
This 500-rouble issue belongs to Belarus's ongoing large-format devotional series, which employs selective gold plating over .925 silver to differentiate sacred imagery from surrounding decorative elements — a technique borrowed from icon-making tradition itself.
