The Vsevelikoye Voysko Donskoye — the Don Cossack Military Government headquartered at Novocherkassk — issued its own currency during the Civil War as the White movement held the Don region against Bolshevik forces. Printing locally was both a practical necessity and a political statement: the Don Cossacks under Ataman Krasnov had declared themselves an independent state in 1918, and the currency reinforced that claim whether or not the infrastructure to back it existed.
By 1919, Krasnov had been replaced by Bogayevsky and the Don Army folded increasingly under Denikin's AFSR command. These notes circulated in a shrinking territory and collapsed in value rapidly as the White position deteriorated through late 1919 and into 1920.
