The Pemerintah Militer Republik issues from Bengkoeloe represent one of the more improvised chapters of Indonesian monetary history during the independence struggle. With no access to overseas printing facilities and Dutch blockades strangling the republican-held interior of Sumatra, local military administrations were forced to issue their own emergency currency — overprinting or reissuing Japanese occupation notes already in circulation rather than producing anything from scratch.
The handwritten signature and applied stamp are not signs of carelessness. They were the authentication mechanism in a region where a printing press capable of producing security documents simply did not exist. Forgery was a real concern, and the stamps were changed periodically to counter it.
P#S136 is one of the higher denominations in this Bengkoeloe series, suggesting it was intended for larger transactions rather than daily retail use.
