Issued to mark the 25th anniversary of Malaysian independence, this gold piece was authorized under the reign of Yang di-Pertuan Agong VII, Tuanku Haji Ahmad Shah. The 1982 series continued Bank Negara's practice of releasing commemorative gold in denominations impractical for circulation — pieces intended from the outset for reserve holdings and collectors rather than trade.
The .900 fineness follows the older continental standard rather than the .9999 fine issues that would become more common in Malaysian commemorative programs through the late 1980s.
