| 正面描述 | Central field features the Arms of Malaysia, depicting two rampant tigers as supporters flanking a quartered shield surmounted by a crescent and fourteen-pointed star, with a ribbon below. The legend · BANK NEGARA MALAYSIA · curves along the upper periphery in raised Latin lettering, while the denomination $500 appears prominently in the lower field. The design is rendered with high relief against a proof mirror field, imparting a striking two-tone appearance. |

Issued to mark the Fifth Malaysia Plan (1986–1990), the economic blueprint through which Mahathir Mohamad's government attempted to recover from the commodity price collapse that had pushed Malaysia into its worst recession since independence. Rubber and tin — historically the twin pillars of Malaysian export revenue — had both cratered by the mid-1980s, and the Plan represented a decisive pivot toward manufacturing and foreign direct investment as primary growth engines.
The .900 fine standard aligns with Malaysian commemorative gold practice of the period rather than any international monetary obligation.
