Aanvullende informatie

Khorramshahr was the site of some of the most brutal urban combat of the Iran-Iraq War — the city fell to Iraqi forces in late 1980 after a monthlong siege, then was retaken by Iran in May 1982 in an operation that became a defining moment of national pride. The city's name had briefly been changed to "City of Blood" by Iranian forces during the conflict. This commemorative denomination was issued nearly three decades after liberation, part of a broader series honoring cities and moments central to the war's memory in official Iranian historiography.
