500 Rials

This denomination was introduced as part of Iran's gradual effort to manage the rial's collapse in purchasing power — by 2007, 500 rials bought almost nothing, and the coin existed more as a rounding mechanism than a functional unit of exchange. Chronic inflation driven by sanctions pressure and oil-revenue dependence had rendered the entire lower coinage largely ceremonial in daily transactions.

KM#1283 is a later-series piece in a denomination that Iranians routinely referred to in toman equivalents — 50 toman — since the informal toman unit (equal to ten rials) had long superseded official rial denominations in spoken commerce.
