| Beschrijving voorzijde | Countermark of the reign of Afonso VI applied to the obverse of a hammered silver Cruzado of João IV. The countermark consists of a rectangular cartouche surmounted by a royal crown, enclosing the numeral '500' in bold relief, denoting the new face value of 500 Réis. The host coin's obverse displays the Portuguese royal arms — a shield bearing the quinas (five escutcheons) — surrounded by a circular legend and an outer beaded border, all partially visible beneath and around the applied countermark. The coin's irregular, slightly polygonal flan is characteristic of hammered Portuguese silver coinage of the mid-17th century. |
