The Junta de Moneda de Cataluña was a regional body operating outside the structure of the Banco de España, which had only received its formal charter in 1849. This 500 Reales de Vellón note dates to a period when Catalonia's commercial establishment remained deeply reluctant to cede monetary authority to Madrid, and regional issuing bodies continued to function in parallel with the nascent national bank.
The embossed dry stamp was the sole security measure — no watermark, no intaglio printing. That austerity made counterfeiting a genuine concern, and the series was relatively short-lived.
