| Reverse description | Central field displays a bold cross of the Order of Christ (Cruz de Cristo) with flared, concave arms, occupying the majority of the flan and rendered in strong relief. The cross is plain and unadorned, its four arms nearly reaching the inner border. A circular Latin legend reading IN HOC SIGNO VINCES (In this sign you will conquer) surrounds the cross, punctuated by a decorative stop. The design is typical of Portuguese gold coinage of the reign of Sebastião I, executed by the hammered technique on an irregular flan. |
