Obverse description Central field bears the crowned Portuguese royal arms — a quartered shield displaying the five quinas (escutcheons charged with bezants) of Portugal and the seven castles of Algarve, surmounted by an elaborate royal crown. The shield is rendered in relief in the characteristic late-medieval Manueline heraldic style. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, separated from the shield by a plain inner border. The entire design is struck on an irregular flan typical of hammered gold coinage of the period.
