Henrique I acceded to the Portuguese throne in 1578 at roughly 66 years old, already a Cardinal and in poor health, having never intended to rule. His reign lasted less than two years, ending with his death in January 1580 — which triggered the succession crisis that delivered Portugal into Philip II of Spain's hands later that year. Coins struck in his name were produced across an extremely compressed window.
The Gomes He 04 attribution places this among the better-documented issues of his coinage, but survival rates remain low given the brevity of the mint's production run under his authority.
